MathReference, Download Page

Download the contents of this website onto your pc for your personal use.  Thousands have taken advantage of this offer.

Updated 09/08/2008.  Recent additions: cellular homology, higher order π groups, topological groups, free groups as graphs.

I hereby grant you the right to make a copy of this website on your pc for personal use.  (This does not give you the right to publish or otherwise redistribute this material.)  This may be useful if you are not always connected to the internet, and you would like to access the Math Reference library from your own computer.  If you have a laptop, carry this archive wherever you go.

The file is a zip archive.  Download it to your favorite directory, perhaps your home directory (Unix), or c:/ (Windows).  Expand the archive using the unzip command.  (Windows will do this for you if you click on it from the My Computer application.)  The result will be a directory such as MathReference-05202004.  The version number is the date, in this example, May 20, 2004.  Check this page from time to time to see if I have posted a newer version.  If so, delete your old version and download the latest.

The contents of the download directory mirrors my website.  As such, it must be viewed using an internet browser such as Explorer or Netscape Navigator.  If you try to view these files using Word, it won't work, because I use javascript to build the interpage links dynamically.  So - fire up your browser and type /MathReference-09082008/main.html into the url bar.  The main page should emerge.  When it does, add this (local) link to your favorites.  Remember, you will need to update this bookmark each time you download a newer version.

Since you are not looking at the site through a web server, the search function, which is implemented via a perl script, will not work.  I was too lazy to delete the search icons from all the pages, but if you push that button, you won't get anywhere.  The next best thing is to call up the SiteMap.  It's a long list, but if you scroll through it you'll probably find what you're looking for.  Don't be afraid to use your browser's text-search function, case insensitive if possible.  And, since everything is local to your machine, you can always grep.

You don't have to worry about viruses, because these are text files, not executables.  Besides, I run Linux.

This archive represents an enormous amount of work.  I'm giving it away for free, for personal use, because I don't think I could make much money off of it, and, I would really like this project to survive me.  The best way to ensure that is to have it installed in thousands of computers across the world.  Thank you for your interest.
